The bar is so very low these days... What happened indeed. I think shorter attention spans has a lot to do with it.

The rise of feminism, then postmodernism and now wokeism parallells perfectly the shuttering of mental institutions in all western nations. The US started shuttering most of those in the 1970s and 1980s, most of Europe outside the Eastern Block followed suit in the 1990s.

While correlation isn't proof, it's the first thing you look for and the corollary to "correlation isn't causation" is "ceteris paribus" - all else being equal.

(I'm folding all the Adorno, Foucault et al-inspired professors into the unholy trinity of feminism, postmodernism and woke.)

What else changed during the 1970s to the 1990s? How "higher education" is funded, both from the side of academia and the student in spe. The more students, the more money. A higher percentage of the population having gone to university or similar equalled - to the politicians - progress. An unsavoury and unsanitary, mentally speaking, union between politics and academia was born from this:

Academia validates and gives the seal of approval to politcal programs deemed insane and evil by the constituency; politicans fund academics in perpetuity and make laws to keep said academics from having to face such trifling things as needing proof.

"Som en gyllne ring i suggans tryne, är skönhet hos en kvinna som saknar vett";

"Like a golden ring in the sow's snout, is beauty in a woman lacking wisdom"

If it weren't for a bit of feminism these last 50 years, I would not be able to wear pants and work outside the house. I would not have been seem as worthy of a college education. These may seem like small things to you, but I can assure you they are quite important to me.

Complete fiction, and you know it.

Unless you're from a moslem nation of course.

Not wear pants in 1973?

Utter nonsense, or ignorance on your side, or both.

What irritates me the most is that people like this childish politician believe all their emoting -- as opposed to reasoning -- is virtuous. That they are virtuous. She is proud of herself. Her smug smile tells the tale. "Admire me." Just think about who would vote for that.

Gosh, that lady from the first video reminds me of the red-faced, sweaty-pits Westboro Baptist Church man who used to yell “God hates fags” outside the library when I was in college. I wonder if they’re related. Same pitch change, same passion, same glasses.

Omg, thanks for linking too the chanting senator. 😄 She reminded me of a toddler throwing a tantrum, and that is the emotional tone of some of the histrionics that occur these days - childish, sometimes well-intentioned, but childish nonetheless. I think it's a little hard for other adults to respond to, which probably makes those engaging in this childish behavior feel more empowered. We just aren't used to seeing other adults being childish like that.

I saw this video yesterday. This woman is a lunatic. Like you say Rudolph, I can change my position on an issue if persuaded with facts or logic. The problem with liberals is they try to persuade you with emotion outbursts.

"The stifling of debate, the refusal to participate in debate, the unwillingness to be challenged, these are not healthy things at all.".... I know exactly what you mean here so don't take the following the wrong way. When I was young there was no 'debate' about any kind of sexual dysphoria. Nobody talked about it or was remotely interested in it (apart I suppose the dysphoric privately to each other)....Oh Happy Days!

(I usually attempt to avoid cursing in these comments, but this time needed the "seasoning" in the soup.) Doc, every time I fail to read one of your treatises immediately, and then read later, I find myself thinking, "Why the absolute flaming fuck did I not read this shit sooner?!?!" This Substack posting is no different. I almost immediately thought the (recorded) speech of Senator Cavanaugh was a skit. Then I realized it was actually the rantings of an elected official, at an actual meeting of other elected officials, doing "elected officials' business" or something like that. We have a society where people like Senator Cavanaugh would gladly suggest that opinions they oppose should be limited or censored, in direct contravention of free speech. Simultaneously, when they "have the mic" they break off some verbal feces like she offered. I won't even comment on the debate team fiasco, because I think I might have reached my post limit for curse words. Keep up the good work, Riggery Pokery!

I was so impressed by this I rushed off to “manage my subscription” and made a pledge. Then I got a lovely thank you from (digital / virtual) you thanking me and asking me to spread the good news. Unfortunately I duly trotted off to X to tweet my support and got sucked into an hour of complete time wasting aaaargh

Ben's not very smart. It's a poor reflection on her that she seems to be not as smart as he is.
