I strongly support the demand that only the exp() function should be integrated until all the other functions have learned how to properly integrate. Can you believe that cos() culturally appropriates sin() when it is integrated?
I met my wife at university, and among our friends there are many couples where it worked the same way. Of course there were some excesses (a professor drinking too much at a party and kind of becoming too interested in certain female students, research assistants keeping a mattress in their office because it might come in handy, things like that) but that became part of the folklore. And this was *mathematics*, and in *Germany*.
I read Bari's column yesterday, and while it's a no brainer that getting involved with a cowrker is a bad idea Sabatini wasn't actually a coworker, nor a subordinate. They worked in different fields in the same building. There was a significant age difference, but the woman was an accomplished adult in her own field.
But the real problem is one created by the absolutely ridiculous proposition that men and women are "equal." Now I believe men and women are entitled to the same exact "Rights" the reality is men and women are different in significant ways. One way that comes into play here is that women tend to become more emotionally involved than men. That is a factual evolutionary trait. And based upon the text messages and other communications it seems clear they both agreed to keep it casual, but she became emotionally involved and couldn't let go. So she punished him.
It also helps that Bari (a left/liberal woman) who has seen all of the evidence is a trustworthy with source and has demonstrated a principled dedication to actual journalism.
The big push in the US for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion above all else is extremely divisive, ironically, and that's the point. Divide people into groups and have them duke it out over prime positions in a collapsing economy.
With Western history being castigated as being nothing more than the exploits of white exploiters, Western man is being severed from his roots. Deracinate, Atomize, and Rule Over is Davos Man's update on the old adage of Divide and Conquer.
All of this seemingly absurd nonsense has a purpose: existing systems need to be toppled so that a new one (hey, they've even came up with a name: New World Order) can come about.
I remember watching a TV show back in the early 80s. It was a Sci-Fi type show, maybe one of the remakes of "The Twilight Zone." There was a family, regular sexes, Mom, Dad, and son. The Government gave all children tests to assess their intelligence. The little boy was bright, the parents were proud, but apprehensive about his intelligence. The little boy scored quite high on his test. He was ecstatic and very proud of himself. The parents were scared to death and crying. An agent of the Government came to visit their home, because of their son's high score. He came to take their son from them, because he was too smart, and the Government couldn't have that. --- Is this predictive of what is to come? You know THEY do not want bright people. You can't rule them as easily.
haha - I would suspect it will come with a psych eval too. The govt does need intelligent people to run its own services and come up with new ideas - but it needs them to be veering towards the sociopathic end of the spectrum :-)
Ah, yes, I also immediately though "hell hath no fury..." But you know what? It's also possible the woman concerned TRULY feels like her actions are legitimate. Just as the trans movement has convinced pubescent teens that this confusing time in their lives is proof that they are in fact in the "wrong body," the #metoo movement led many women to re-evaluate neutral (or even pleasurable) moments in their past and develop negative feelings about them and beliefs that somehow someone else is responsible for the choices they made (even as adults).
I suppose the argument would be along the lines of "you might have **thought** it was a perfectly good relationship at the time, but for reasons x, y, and z it was actually abusive and harassment"
I think most of us have probably had similar thoughts about all sorts of things - not just relationships. We might look back on something we thought was OK in the past and re-evaluate it today and come to a different conclusion.
When it comes to matters of sex this post-rationalization becomes fraught with dangers. Let's consider a stereotypical scenario in which a guy fancies a gal and applies a 'charm offensive'. She's not initially all that interested but becomes so after a couple of drinks and some laughs. They have sex. Afterwards, she decides she had been manipulated and coerced into sex. There was definitely an element of manipulation on the part of the guy here - but we all go through life 'manipulating' others - usually it gets called persuasion. Is it wrong and who's to blame?
Good points-- and this made me reflect upon the importance of having a moral code and sticking to it vs. demanding others have a moral code that they stick to. (For instance, a handsome and intelligent guy could launch a thousand charm offensives on me, but I'm married, and that's a vow I'm not willing to break. All men could also decide they're not going to try to seduce a married woman, but if that is my prerequisite for remaining faithful to my husband, do I really hold any moral high ground?)
Incidentally-- I believe "indigenous ways of knowing" would tend to agree that our expectations of males and females in these scenarios are, to use the scientific terminology, super weird. And, having lived and traveled in a female body, I can reassure you that expecting women to show off their bodies and have a few drinks without the threat of seduction is likely the legacy of white supremacy and American slavery, as well as colonialism, in which marginalized men of color were expected to keep their eyes and hands off white women no matter her behavior or presentation. (This is only the first draft of my thesis; any and all buzzwords I can insert appreciated.)
It’s kooky out there. Are all the sciences getting woke like this? How’s the good ol boy field of petroleum engineering or geology? I just took my preschoolers to a gem mineral and fossil show and we had a great time looking at the specimens. Still kinda hoping my kids grow up to be midwives or plumbers or electricians
I don't know how deep the problem goes - but it is certainly something to be concerned with. There was a paper written a while back on the "Feminist Theory of Glaciation" - just reading the abstract makes your eyes spin it's so potty.
Gender quacks love blathering about gender because it means whatever they want it to mean. Biological sex -a binary in humans- is kryptonite to them. That is why they use their cult word “gender”.
I had a high school chemistry teacher like yours. He was an ex-Marine and looked the part, while I was a hippy kid with long hair and bell-bottom pants. But Mr. Hitz was awesome, had a fine sense of humor, was a great teacher, and I still use his super-clear method of doing unit conversion on a regular basis.

well, they say a mathematician is simply a device for converting alcohol into theorems :-)

Yes, I was struck by the quality of the piece. Hard to find journalism of that quality in any 'mainstream' outlet
Suzi Weiss, not Bari -- I believe they are married.
Zuzy is her sister. Her wife is Nellie Bowles.
Complicated -- thanks.

there is a reason why riggery poker always is the first i read amongst the many suggestions i get....
Aw - thanks so much Jan. I'm very honoured.

yes - that's true

Made me laugh out loud, thank you!
Thanks for the feedback - very much appreciated. I try my best :-)
Well-ranted.
Thank you :-)
I do love a good rant - and yes I do try to be a little bit outrageous and excessive, but I hope the serious points I make come through OK
Yep -- they did. Is part of what makes a good rant.

Maybe it has to do with the "cosmic cretinism" Medvedev was talking about
(?)
