As we’ve seen over the last couple of weeks, if we could only Free Palestine we’d have Reproductive Justice™ and Climate Justice™ - or maybe it’s the other way round. If we freed Palestine we’d have these things. Dunno.
The future leaders and legislators, the very brightest and best of our upcoming generation, are currently at universities learning how to make the world a better place through Applied Sloganizing.
These students are not unhinged. They have hinges. They need them for when their heads have to be opened and topped up with The Current Thing™.
But it’s not all their fault. When the people at the top, those vastly superior beings who guide us and steer humanity through crisis after crisis, say similar things, who can blame them?
Here we have the Labour Minister for The Emancipation of Leeks (or something - not sure what) in Wales defending the Welsh Parliament’s decision to impose 20mph speed limits across the country1. The only thing leeking appears to be his brains.
The full text of the clip is the following :
“Unless we shift the way we start to do transport, our economy is gonna get trashed, trashed, by climate change”
Personally, I think he’s been trashed by a few too many glasses of Penderyn single malt.
Here’s the thing. Democracy, I think we’d possibly mostly agree, is a good thing. The downside is that people like the Slogan Head above get voted into power. It’s quite a serious downside. The problem is that alternatives are even worse.
We’ve seen over the last 3 years or so what rule by Experts™ looks like - and it was a clusterfuck of epic proportions.
Let’s face it, stick someone like Richard Burton (a more famous Welshman than the Minister for Leeks) on a platform and you’d vote for him even if he just read the telephone directory. Such a magical voice. Here’s a short clip (1m 17s) of him reading a famous poem of Dylan Thomas
The current crop of decidedly-less-majestic-than-a-Burton politicians seem to want us to go happily into the dying of the light - because there will be no bloody electricity to be had if they get their way.
The paradox is that democracy itself is, perhaps, our biggest threat to democracy. I’m not sure exactly who we do want to be in power, but The Slogan People are definitely not top of my list.
These people have a hissy fit when you use the “wrong” pronouns for God’s sake. Can you imagine what they’d be like if you voted in the “wrong” way? They’d ban it if they were in power, just like they seek to ban any dissenting opinion (coz it’s hateful, you see).
If we take that strip of land that is much in the news at the moment, and arouses passions like few others, the governing body of Gaza (Hamas) were democratically elected back in 2006 and then promptly dispensed with democracy.
This whole Democracy™ thing does seem to be something of a scam, at times. We get presented with an illusory choice - often between just two really shitty alternatives - and think that our vote actually means anything.
The only thing most politicians care about is maintaining their own positions.
But I have no suggestions for anything better. As Churchill once said, “democracy is the worst form of government – except for all the others that have been tried”.
At the moment, the kind of choice we’re being presented with is between super-duper-climate-extremism on steroids and merely super-duper-climate-extremism. Grind us into poverty, and energy poverty, at 30mph or 20mph - seems to be the choice we have.
People who can, in all seriousness, claim that changing a speed limit from 30mph to 20mph in a teeny-tiny little blob of land like Wales will have any impact on Climate Change™ should really not be running anything more complicated than a bath - and even then you’d suspect they’d struggle with the complexity of it.
I kind of think that wanting to be a politician should be reason for automatic disqualification from the job.
We should probably select Members of Parliament in the way we randomly pick people for jury service - they’d probably end up doing a better job of it.
The Climate™ is replete with crazy. It can’t be emphasized enough that our various climate models are speculative, at best. On the basis of these speculative models we’re planning to destroy the last few centuries of progress and take us all back into some kind of Global Feudalism - at least back then in feudal times proper they were allowed to burn stuff to be able to see at night.
I name the Minister for Leeks (or whatever he’s actually minister of) as this week’s recipient of the Canute Award - which you can abbreviate and rearrange more appropriately.
As I understand it, everywhere that had a previous 30mph speed limit now has a 20mph speed limit. This is to save the planet. Go Wales!
"These students are not unhinged. They have hinges. They need them for when their heads have to be opened and topped up with The Current Thing™."....pure poetry! And buckets of common sense.
On a more serious note: 'Democracy'....Ah that old thing! "Any UK conservative government that tried to challenge the current progressive ‘consensus’ would not just be at war with their own civil service. They would be at war with every civic, quasi-governmental, charitable and academic institution. They would be at war with an immensely powerful, octopus-like legal establishment. Needless to say they would be at war with the media. Given how limited would be their power in the face of all this, perhaps the best thing would be to admit it!" https://grahamcunningham.substack.com/p/carry-on-governing
The USA in reality is a Republic, however with the swamp and it’s lackies the Democrat party committing voter fraud on so many levels we don’t actually have anything close to choice any longer. Unless we have over the rigged elections then next stage we will see will be an attempt to take away the people’s right to bear arms. If they pull that off the entire would will be a police state very quickly. Armed Americans are all that stands between global slavery and any vestiges of freedom.
