The conversion of the founder of National Abortion Rights Action League, Dr. Bernard Nathanson, began when ultrasound technology came on the scene. The "it's just a clump of cells" argument was rendered nonsensical when ultrasound displayed what was clearly and obviously a tiny human being. He became a devout Catholic and pro-life evangelist.
The same people now screaming (there is nothing subtle about them...), "My body, my choice!" are the same ones who were more than happy to force others to get injected with the covid vaccine. The principle of bodily autonomy works on a sliding scale for them, apparently. And, from cm27874's tweet, they displayed contempt for those who reached for horse medicine to save their lives, but now are apparently A-OK with taking horse medicine to end a life. This is Olympic Gold-Medal worthy hypocrisy and shamelessness on display.
Our societies' view on pregnancy and abortion reflects, just as the view on sex and gender, the denial of a reality that is beyond our control. Unwanted pregnancy is considered parasitic - and has to be fought against. Unwanted childlessness is considered limiting - and has to be fought against.
And when people really, really want to retain control, it is suddenly ok to take horse medicine:
I second cm's thanks for sharing your personal story. I'm glad you are here.
My personal sense is that the more you treasure and value life, the happier and more grateful you will be. But I didn't know that before I had children of my own.
Thanks, I enjoyed that and appreciate the dilemma posed. Reading it I thought, What isn't life? It's all life - isn't it? We live in life, we think in life, we doubt in life, we question - nothing happens outside of life. Physical life has apparent beginnings and endings - but we know energy - that is behind our temporary bodies - continues. So do the souls or spirits of aborted fetuses (and yes I'm assuming there is an energetic cohesive intelligence associated with the growing body) simply continue on energetically awaiting a better opportunity? If everything is a reflection of life - however distorted it might get - then we don't actually need to worry about life per se. It's more a matter of how, in the physical world of form, we collectively and individually value life's arrival into form and do we wish to have collective agreements on that value? Some will no doubt see it as a full-on miracle that is truly sacred. Some won't.
Personally I like the notion of Roe V Wade going away. State sanctioned death doesn't feel good. And I also like the notion that women who have their reasons (Like your Mom for instance) for not allowing a physical life to enter the world via their own body have a choice with what to do. They can 'kill' a form, they can't kill the energy behind it that gives life to the form.
I don't know. Maybe it shouldn't be this hard? Maybe it's obvious? And it eludes us anyway.

George Carlin on the sanctity of life
https://youtu.be/M-bLf4F0PM4
My body my choice, up to a point. Late term is barbaric and if you don't know by then, you're clueless.
Otherwise I'm gonna start lobbying for cancer cell rights, cause they got DNA too.
George Carlin was a great, insightful comedian.
Cancer cells will not become human beings. Neither will sperm or eggs, alone. Add them together and voila! Life begins.

Nice column as usual.
I began to write a response that grew to be too much, so I turn it into my 1st Substack.
