For a bit of a break from my usual - here’s a musical interlude.
Fans of the comedy show The Norsemen will already know the about the wicked sense of humour some folks in Norway have, but Italians pretending to be Norsemen? Here’s Nanowar of Steel’s ode to Odin
It’s a great satire on the whole genre of metal and flatpack furniture.
It’s not quite folcloristico music, but it’s a lot of fun.
Here’s one famous folk melody that is guaranteed to have me reaching for my flageolet.
I love that tune.
If you’re into tonguing, you could try this fabulous version of the sea shanty The Wellerman which, I believe, was created as a kind of mash-up from the original by a bunch of independent people who just added their bits in - one great benefit of an internet connected world, despite the downsides I often moan about.
The great Eric Bogle created some wonderful anti-war folk songs with The Green Fields of France being one of his most famous, and sad. You’re either going to love or hate this amped up version from The High Kings
Across the great pond of linguistic confusion the folk music of the US is also something I love. Here’s the band Crooked Still live. They were the first bluegrass band I heard that featured a cello, of all things. I thought it was all fiddles and banjos.
And we can’t forget that other great US folk tradition of the blues. Here’s the fabulous John Lee Hooker in a clip from the movie The Blues Brothers. The clip seems to capture a real slice of culture here - but that’s maybe just me reading too much into things.
If you’re not into all this kind of music and prefer songs about umbrellas or songs about wiping one’s pussy juices off the floor, then I sympathise. Have a drink - preferably some Jack Daniels.
Have a great Sunday
Good stuff! Happy Sunday
This guy just hit #1 on iTunes and Billboard here in the USA. Going back to Americas roots of folk music. He’s lamenting the bullshit coming from the “Rich Men North of Richmond” which is the elites in Washington,DC (which is north of Richmond, Virginia)
Over 44 million views in two weeks. He’s roughed in something real. Which is what this kind of music is all about.
